Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR)
ICE-SAR, operating in some of the most treacherous waters of the world with its rocky coast and frequent storms has developed a small, but highly effective volunteer search and rescue service. With a Icelandic population of only 285,000 and limited financial resources, ICE-SAR operates 101 volunteer search and rescue teams, plus 91 accident prevention branches and has 49 youth groups. It has 4,000 rescue team members and 18,000 overall members. ICE-SAR is the official search and rescue unit of Iceland , conducting in addition to maritime rescue, glacier, mountain, and urban
Operations. It operates nine all-weather lifeboats, thirty-five RHIB's and fifty-nine small inflatables. On the dry-land side, it operates 170 modified trucks, 150 snow mobiles and 24 snow cats.
AFRAS has entered into an agree with ICE-SAR to help raise funds from US donors to purchase several additional all-weather lifeboats to operate in areas along their coast not adequately covered by their existing lifeboats.
