The (French) National Society for Rescue at Sea (SNSM)

La Societe Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer (SNSM) is a strong and competent organization of volunteers dedicated to saving lives at sea.

It was established in 1865 and merged with a Brittany rescue organization in 1967. It currently numbers about 5,000 volunteers, plus about 32,000 members who pay dues. It operates 230 lifeboat stations, sixty of which are seasonal and provides about 40% of the maritime rescue assets in France .

It also runs 27 training centers for boat crews and lifeguards.

AFRAS has been working closely with the SNSM on matters relating to the

Caribbean -especially Martinique , Guadeloupe and St. Martin which are part of metropolitan France . At present the SNSM has seven lifeboats that operate under the control of the MRCC in Port de France
